Little Defender

Last week we made a trip to the WIC office to attend a class and pick up our vouchers.  It was James, Sam and myself.  There is a small area with some toys for the children to play with while they wait, and thankfully the classroom has been updated with a few more toys as well because there were quite a few children in tow at our visit.  While we were waiting for our name to be called at the end, a child happened to pull out a fancy cell phone and start viewing a movie.  Well...of course, all the kids gathered around to see the video.  The boy with the phone, who happened to be a good size bigger than the rest of the kids, started to get upset that other children were watching his video.  He shoved James out of the way, and James just stood there and looked at him, but he didn't react or respond in any manner...this is generally how James will respond to confrontations like this...unless of course it involves his brother, Sam.  Well...the boy then shoved another child out of the way, this child was slightly smaller than James.  When that happened, James stepped in and shoved the bigger kid back.  I was so proud of him in that moment, but I was also grateful we had collected our vouchers and could leave that disaster.  Lo and behold, though, the bully's parents never stepped in or said a word.

When I shared the story with my husband, he was beyond proud of James for sticking up for another child against a bully.  I will tell you what...our children will never get in trouble for defending others, or for that matter, defending themselves as well.
