Today I was under the impression that my husband was going to have to stay at work late...possibly not arriving home until 8 p.m. or so. I felt sad for him because he was most likely going to end up missing the boys' bedtimes...not to mention not being able to spend some of the evening with them. Then my husband called and said plans had changed...he could come home, but he would have to call in to check on things at 7:30.
So...instead of making a super simple dinner for myself and the boys, I decided to go with my original idea. In order to get dinner on the table in a timely manner and allow my husband time with the boys before his phone call, I got started right away on dinner. James helped me measure the brown rice and water and get the rice cooker going. Then while I was prepping the onions and mushrooms, James was playing in the kitchen sink. It was pretty cute to watch...he would use soap to wash his hands and then fill up dishes with water and rinse them off. This entertained him the whole time I prepared dinner...even after my husband came home, James still wanted to play in the sink. Generally James hasn't been given this privilege, so this was something special to James, and apparently he really enjoyed it.
