On Saturday James never fell asleep during nap time. We could hear him moving around and talking...which we didn't mind as long as he was quiet in his room. Then on the drive to a birthday party, James fell asleep on the way there...only about fifteen minutes of sleep, if that. James had a great attitude and the lack of a good nap didn't really affect his afternoon much at all.
Well...yesterday the boys and I took my mom out for a picnic lunch to celebrate her birthday. My mom's birthday falls on Easter this year, so I thought it would be fun to do something separate from the holiday, and since she had the day off work, we decided we would go play at the park together and enjoy a meal. We headed out a little later than usual, and we even stayed past the normal time I would want the boys down for a nap (since we had gotten a later start, and the boys were having a lot of fun at the park). On the drive home (maybe five minute drive) Sam fell fast asleep, but James was still awake in the backseat. We unloaded the boys, put Sam to bed, and then I read James a story before I laid him down for his nap. James did fall asleep and take a decent nap; however, it really affected his bedtime. Granted this could be because his nap was a little later than normal.
At bedtime, James kept jumping around in his room...you could hear thuds in the house. He turned the projector on his sound machine on, turned the bedroom light on, was playing and having a grand old time. We had to go into his room about four times to put him back in his bed. I would guess he fell asleep a good hour later than it would normally take him.
Part of me thinks my boy is outgrowing his naps, and that makes me a little sad. It is nice to get that little break where both boys are sleeping. We will see how the next few days go, but perhaps I will just have to incorporate some quiet play time in his room or use the time to do some learning activities (preschool geared stuff) with James. Overall, though, I am not quite ready for James to give up his naps.
